REDSKINS

Redskins
A mascot that “stands for hard work, integrity and a winning tradition.”

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit seeking to cancel the trademarks of the Washington Redskins football team. The judge held that the plaintiffs waited too long to challenge the trademark. The first “Redskins” trademark was registered in 1967, more than two decades before the challenge was first filed in 1992. By the district court reasoning, the complaint should have been filed shortly after the trademark was registered in 1967! The case is under appeal with the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals.

The attorney for the Redskins is confident that had it gone to trial, the trademark would not have been deemed “disparaging” to tribal members. His response was that the “Redskins” trademark “…stands for hard work, integrity and a winning tradition….”

The Honor Indians Institute, in conjunction with the Indian Mascots class at the University of Nebraska – Omaha, believe that there are other mascots that could give the Redskins a challenge for the most HONORABLE MASCOT, or mascot that best exemplifies “hard work, integrity and a winning tradition.”
