MASCOTS THAT HONOR: HASKELL INDIAN NATIONS UNIVERSITY SOVEREIGNS

Posted on December 6, 2007 - Filed Under MASCOTS THAT HONOR |

Honor Indians Institute offers an alternative Indian mascot to Haskell Indian Nations University, home of the “Fightin’ Indians.” Rather than perpetuate the negative stereotypes of the past, tribal schools should be promoting the positive aspects of their history and future. Why should the University of North Dakota give up their beloved “Fighting Sioux” mascot, which North Dakota Sioux tribes have not supported, when Haskell Indian Nations University is promoting themselves as the Fightin’ Indians? If it is not appropriate for UND, then why is it appropriate for HINU? To say “because we are Indians” doesn’t make it right. It still promotes negative stereotypes no matter who is using the name. We introduce the Haskell Indian Nations University “SOVEREIGNS.” How about a new slogan: Haskell Indian Nations University, Fightin’ for Sovereignty.” Isn’t that what Indian Nations are striving to protect and fight for today? Why not promote that positive forward thinking mission of the future, rather than the stereotypical “noble savage” image of yesterday? As always, we are here to help.
