Honor Indians Institute introduces the next in our series of “Mascots That Honor,” the Bellevue East High School “BIG ELK.” Bellevue East is currently called the Chieftains. We suggest the BIG ELK in honor of Omaha Chief Big Elk. Big Elk led the Omaha Tribe from approximately 1811, until his death in 1846. He earned a reputation for courage in war, and became popular in the tribe for his fairness in making decisions. He was known as great orator and negotiator in his travels to Washington D.C., in behalf of the Omaha Tribe. He is buried in Bellevue, Nebraska! Bellevue students recently raised money for a granite bench and other gravesite markers. A fitting honor to Chief Big Elk would be to abandon the current lame “Chieftains” mascot, and adopt the BELLEVUE EAST BIG ELK mascot.

We will never change and if you want to talk about mascots talk about B. West’s Mascot
I agree that Bellevue East change the mascot to actually HONOR a true Omaha man. It would be a fitting tribute. Charlie, grow up. Both schools need to change their names. What is wrong with change? How would you like it if the schools in 50 years have mascots like “Whities” and “Blackies”?
I am not native American in any way, but I do appreciate that culture more so than mine. I have a fond respect and understanding of the Omaha tribe. And to name the school after a very honorable man (Big Elk) should HUMBLE the school itself.
Thank you, Omaha.

As a former Bellevue East graduate I like it!
Exactly what is it the Omaha people find objectionable about the “Chieftains”?
