HONORABLE MENTION: BROOKTYNN ZENDEJAS AND MERRILL YESSLITH
Posted on February 26, 2008 - Filed Under Honorable Mention |
Honor Indians Institute would like to honor Brooktynn Zendejas and Merrill Yesslith. They represented Brigham Young University’s J. Reuben Clark Law School at the National Native American Law Students Association (NALSA) Moot Court Competition. The competition was held at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at ASU, in Tempe, AZ. Brooktynn & Merrill were 1 of 58 teams participating in this year’s competition. They competed against schools from the University of Hawaii, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. Brooktynn and Merrill advanced to the “sweet sixteen” and they were eventually eliminated after competing against last year’s winners.
This year’s problem dealt with a tribe’s jurisdiction over fee lands within a reservation. The team researched issues on relinquishment of tribal membership status and tribal jurisdiction over fee lands owned by Indians and non-Indians.
