What I Should Know About Indians: The student will be introduced to the legal, policy and economic history between the United States and Indian Tribes and their members that has shaped current issues and conditions. The student will be able to understand why things are the way they are today.

Individual Lectures: Specific lectures covering numerous topics, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Tribal Identity and Federal Recognition;
  • The Marshall Trilogy: Johnson v. McIntosh; Cherokee Nation v. Georgia; and Worcester v. Georgia;
  • Federal Indian Policy: Treaty, Removal, Assimilation, Reorganization, Termination and Self Determination;
  • Tribal Governments and the Trust Doctrine, Sovereignty, Jurisdiction;
  • The Indian Child Welfare Act;
  • The Indian Civil Rights Act;
  • The U.S. Constitution and Indian Tribes and Tribal Members;
  • Economic Development and Tribal Economies;
  • Indian Mascots, Alternative Indian Mascots and Indian Mascot Offsets.
