Description:
Why are Indian Mascots such a big deal? This book provides
information about Indian tribes and peoples to students, parents and
teachers in an effort to help them understand why voluntarily changing
their Indian mascots is worthy of our time and energy. This book is
more than a book on Indian mascots. It covers information that
students should learn about Indian tribes and people in school, but
rarely is covered in current school curriculum. The book introduces
students to the laws and policies that the U.S. Government adopted
that have impacted lives of the Indian tribes and people.
The myths and misperceptions about Indian people have been perpetuated
by Indian mascots, and particularly by schools that use Indian
mascots. Schools should be a place of learning and destroying
ignorance and misperceptions, not perpetuating them! Most schools
that use Indian mascots are doing so in direct conflict with their own
Mission Statement and educational objectives. We encourage all
schools, especially schools that use Indian mascots, to examine their
educational objectives and decide for themselves if it is still
appropriate to retain Indian mascots. This book will hopefully assist
in looking at the issues surrounding Indian mascots with assistance
from members of the Indian community who contribute their thoughts on
this topic. We strongly encourage parents, students, teachers and
administrators to learn more about this topic and hopefully come to a
conclusion that will truly Honor Indians, rather than perpetuate
ignorance.
