ALTERNATIVE INDIAN MASCOTS: MASCOTS THAT HONOR

Posted on November 29, 2007 - Filed Under MASCOTS THAT HONOR |

Honor Indians Institute would like to introduce a series of alternatives to Indian school mascots. One justification for Indian mascots is that Indian or tribal schools often use Indian mascots. For example, here in Nebraska we have the Omaha Nation Chiefs, Winnebago Indians and the Santee Sioux Warriors. The Ponca Tribe does not have an official tribal school, but the town of Ponca, NE has the Ponca High School Indians. Earlier this week, we introduced the Omaha Nation “BLACK BIRDS” in honor of Elmer Blackbird, an Omaha tribal educator and leader. We would like the tribal schools to set the example for other schools and replace their stereotypical Indian mascot. Instead, tribal schools could opt for a mascot that honors their past and looks to the future without the stereotypical “Indian” imagery. Today we introduce the Ponca High School “STANDING BEARS” in honor of legendary Ponca Chief Standing Bear.
